Jewelry identification is the identification of types, purity, synthesis, artificial, processing and some origin characteristics of gemstones and organic gemstones. The authenticity of jewellery can be accurately identified by eliminating counterfeit jewellery and jades, which are counterfeited to protect the rights and interests of buyers.
Identification of diamonds
Diamonds are the hardest of natural substances. Diamonds can carve any other gemstone, but no other gemstone can carve a diamond. The most accurate and reliable way to distinguish diamonds is to use a thermal conductivity meter to measure the thermal conductivity data to distinguish between true and false diamonds. But the price of thermal conductivity meter is more expensive.
Diamonds are luxurious jewelry. It is common to replace or pretend to be diamonds with cheap gems, artificial gems and even glass in the market. There are several common types of false diamonds:
Zircon: Because it is very similar to diamond, it is the best substitute for diamond. The identification method is that zircon has polarization and high birefringence. When a 10-fold magnifying glass is used to observe the processed zircon prism, it can be seen from the top down that the prism has obvious double shadows at the bottom, while the diamond has no double shadows.
Glass: The refractive index of glass is very low. It doesn't have the sparkling color of a diamond. Especially when it sinks into the water, the glassware has no luster, you can immediately identify it.
Soviet drill: cubic zirconia. It was first developed by the Soviets. Soviet drills are synthetic compounds, but they are similar to natural diamonds in dispersion, refractive index and other aspects. They also have a sparkling attractive appearance. But its hardness is low (8.5), which can be distinguished from diamonds. And the thermal conductivity is much lower than diamond, which can be identified by thermal conductivity meter and distinguished accurately.
Crystal: Although crystal is a natural mineral transparent crystal. It looks like a diamond after processing, but it lacks the colour of the diamond.
So what is the difference between the natural green and dyed green of jadeite? The reason why natural jadeite has green, white and purple is that the grains of the jadeite are of these colors. So when we look at the color of a natural jadeite, its color and crystal are not bounded. And dyed jadeite, its original crystal is colorless. The dyestuff that enters the jadeite after dyeing penetrates along the interstitial space or some slight cracks in the crystal, so the color and the crystal will have a distinct demarcation.
Specific gravity test method:
There is a specific gravity liquid on the market for measuring the specific gravity of gemstones. We can use 3.32 gravity solution to test real and fake diamonds. The proportion of natural diamond is 3.52. All natural diamonds will sink when they are placed in the specific gravity water. Therefore, any gem floating in the specific gravity water is not a diamond.
Diamonds have high refractive index. The diamond with higher refractive index has stronger light reflectivity and lower relative perspective. A paper with a straight line can be prepared. The two unknown diamonds which need be measured face down and press on the straight line. The diamond's back can be directly viewed with the naked eye. If you can see the straight line under the diamond, it is certainly not a natural diamond.
Diamonds have an oil-absorbing property to grease, but counterfeit diamonds have no such property. Put a diamond on your face with a trace of grease. Rubbing the diamond with your thumb will make your thumb feel sticky and not easy to slide. The counterfeit diamond will make the thumb feel slippery.
Metrics and Weights:
A carat of natural diamond has a diameter of about 6.50 mm (0.65 cm). Most counterfeit diamonds have a considerable difference in diameter size from natural diamonds under the same weight of 1 carat. So you can use a jewelry scale to weigh out a carat of gems for comparison. Of course, it is better to choose a scale with high accuracy.
What do you know about jewelry identification? It's really hard to see with the naked eye. Even experts can only see a rough picture at most. But I think there are many ways above which can help you. As long as we do not go shopping blindly for cheap, prudent purchase will not be deceived.
